| Description |
US / Canada border: the Saskatchewan, North Dakota, Montana border tri-point, 49d 00'N 104d 03'W. looking SSW. We also see at left a rusted US Customs warning reminder sign, "If you don't report to customs you will be fined." One can see that none of the fences run on the exact border lines, which is the correct way, according to the rules, at least for the international border. This is Monument 583, elev. 665 m, 104d 03' W, 49d N. Indeed, there are time zone and daylight savings time issues at the border... e.g., here Montana is 1 hour earlier than the other parts of the photo. To get here, at least in 1994, one approaches from the north, parks at an oil well, and walks the remaining 400 m. The old U.S. Customs warning sign appears (to me, anyway) to be placed slightly north of the international boundary monument. Optical illusion... or did the US actually place this sign on Canadian soil? |
